Call Me Kat is a sitcom that follows the life of Kat, played by Mayim Bialik, who quits her job as a math professor to open a cat café in Louisville, Kentucky. The show revolves around her misadventures as she tries to make the café successful and navigate her relationships with her unpredictable mother and quirky friends.
In season 1 episode 10, Business Council, the focus is on the café's financial troubles. The episode starts with Kat receiving a letter from the Business Council, informing her that her property is going to be appraised. This appraisal could increase the property value, leading to higher property taxes, and ultimately putting the café's finances at risk.
To prevent this, Kat decides to speak to the council members and convince them to not increase the appraisal value. She ropes in her mother, Sheila, and her friends, Phil and Randi, to help her in this task.
Kat and her mother head to the council meeting where she gives a speech on how the café has become an integral part of the community and how it would be detrimental to its survival if the property value increased. Though her speech is well-received, the council informs her that the decision is not up to them and that they will have to wait for the department of taxation to assess the property.
Meanwhile, Phil and Randi come up with a plan to raise money for the café. They suggest that they host a charity auction where they sell off items that don't sell very well in the café, such as cat-themed umbrellas and mugs. They also ask the café's regular customers to donate items to the auction.
The auction turns out to be a success and not only raises enough money to cover the potential increase in property taxes but also helps Kat and her friends connect with their customers on a deeper level.
In another subplot, Kat's former crush, Max, played by Cheyenne Jackson, returns to town, and she finds that he has started a successful business in the same street as her café. However, things turn sour between them when Max tries to confront Kat about why she didn't return his calls. Kat realizes that she never got his messages, and Max believes that she's lying. The two have a fiery argument before Phil and Randi intervene and try to calm them down.
The episode ends on a happy note with Kat and Max reconciling and him becoming a regular customer at the café.
