Hank Moody is back in Los Angeles after a stint in rehab, but his return is not exactly a walk in the park. With his ex-girlfriend Karen engaged to another man and his daughter Becca growing up faster than he can keep up with, Hank is feeling lost and unsure of where he fits in.
To complicate matters, his novel has been turned into a Hollywood movie and he is forced to work with the film's director, a pompous and egotistical man named Sasha Bingham. Despite his reservations, Hank agrees to work on the film in order to provide for his family and pay off his debts.
In the midst of all this chaos, Hank reconnects with an old friend, rocker Atticus Fetch, who is living in a mansion in the Hollywood Hills. Atticus convinces Hank to accompany him on a road trip to New York City, where they plan to write a rock opera together.
Meanwhile, Becca is struggling with her own growing pains as she begins to explore her sexuality and deal with the consequences of her actions. As Hank tries to navigate his new life while still grappling with his past mistakes, he realizes that he may be more lost than ever before.
Exile On Main St. is a compelling and introspective start to the fourth season of Californication, as it explores the themes of redemption, self-discovery, and the uncertainty that comes with change. The episode sets the stage for what promises to be a wild and emotional journey as Hank tries to find his place in a world that is constantly evolving around him.
