In Californication season 3 episode 9 titled "Mr. Bad Example," Hank Moody (played by David Duchovny) continues to struggle with his alcoholism and the aftermath of his affair with Mia. Hank's ex-girlfriend Karen is getting serious with her new beau, Ben, causing Hank to feel more alone than ever. Meanwhile, Charlie is dealing with his own relationship problems as he tries to mend his marriage with Marcy.
As always, Hank is facing serious writer's block, which is only compounded by his addiction. He faces pressure from his editor to finish his novel, but Hank can't seem to find the inspiration he needs. His agent, Charlie, comes up with a plan to help Hank get past his block: they'll lock themselves in a hotel room with a bunch of booze and wait for Hank's creativity to kick in.
Elsewhere, Karen is trying to balance her new relationship with Ben and her lingering feelings for Hank. She's been trying to keep Hank at arm's length, but he keeps worming his way back into her life. When they run into each other at a coffee shop, Hank confides in Karen that he's hit a wall with his writing and is feeling lost. Karen, ever the supportive friend, tries to help Hank get back on track.
Meanwhile, Marcy is trying to win back Charlie's trust after he caught her cheating on him. Marcy is desperate to make things right, but it seems like Charlie might be ready to move on. Marcy's attempts to win him back only seem to push him further away.
Back at the hotel, Hank and Charlie are getting increasingly drunk and rowdy. They're making a mess of the room, and it's clear that Hank's writing is not going anywhere. In a moment of clarity, Hank realizes that the real reason he's struggling with his writing is that he's been avoiding his true feelings about Mia. He calls Karen in the middle of the night to confess everything, but it's unclear how Karen will react.
The episode ends with Hank and Charlie stumbling out of their hotel room, still drunk and disheveled. Hank may have had a breakthrough with his writing, but he still has a long way to go before he can truly face his problems.
In "Mr. Bad Example," Californication continues to explore the complicated relationships and messy emotional lives of its characters. Despite their flaws and mistakes, Hank, Karen, and Charlie all seem to be searching for something deeper and more meaningful in their lives. Whether they'll find it remains to be seen.
