In Californication season 1 episode 9, titled "Filthy Lucre," protagonist and writer Hank Moody finds himself in financial turmoil as a result of his lavish lifestyle and lack of income. To make matters worse, his agent Charlie Runkle has lost his job which means that they are both struggling to make ends meet.
In an effort to earn some quick cash, Hank agrees to collaborate with his younger lover, Mia, on a screenplay. However, their creative differences quickly become apparent as Mia's vision for the project begins to clash with Hank's own ideas. As the tension between them grows, Hank finds himself stuck between a rock and a hard place as he tries to salvage the project without compromising his artistic integrity.
Meanwhile, Hank's ex-girlfriend Karen becomes fed up with his antics, leading her to take a drastic step in an attempt to distance herself from him. Additionally, Charlie's wife Marcy begins to worry about their financial situation and decides to try her hand at making some money by providing marital counseling to a wealthy couple.
As the episode progresses, the characters' financial woes and personal struggles come to a head, leading to a number of unexpected twists and turns.
