Caillou Season 5 Episode 18, Good Friend Caillou, centers around the titular character's efforts to be a good friend to everyone around him. The episode starts with Caillou and his best friend Leo playing in the park. Caillou opens up to Leo about how he wants to be a good friend to everyone and what that means to him. Leo agrees and tells Caillou that he's already a great friend.
Caillou's first opportunity to be a good friend comes when he sees his sister Rosie struggling to climb up the slide. Caillou encourages her and helps her up, showing her that he's always there for her. Later, Caillou and Leo are playing with a new ball when it accidentally goes flying over the fence. Rather than simply forgetting about the ball, Caillou finds a way to retrieve it by asking for help from a neighbor.
Next, Caillou and his family visit their neighbor Mr. Hinkle and Caillou notices that he seems sad. Using his newfound understanding of what it means to be a good friend, Caillou tries to talk to him and make him feel better. Mr. Hinkle tells Caillou that he's just feeling a little lonely and Caillou offers to come over and play with him. Mr. Hinkle is grateful for the company and Caillou learns that being a good friend sometimes means being there for people when they need it most.
The final challenge for Caillou comes when he learns that Leo is moving away. Feeling sad and unsure of what to do, Caillou once again turns to his understanding of being a good friend. He decides to make Leo a scrapbook of all their favorite memories together, including pictures and drawings. Leo is touched by the gesture and knows that even though they won't be living near each other, they'll always be best friends.
Throughout the episode, Caillou shows a real empathy and maturity beyond his years, and viewers are treated to a heartwarming reminder of what it means to be a good friend to those around us.
