As Michael's search for Anson and the man responsible for Max's murder continues, he comes across an old enemy who could help him in his quest. Meanwhile, Fiona and Jesse are attempting to help a man who has been wrongfully accused of a crime and is now facing hard time in prison. They may have a surefire plan to get him out, but they'll need Michael's expertise to make it happen.
The episode starts off with Michael still on the trail of Anson and trying to find any information he can about the man who killed Max. He knows that Anson is a master manipulator and is always one step ahead, so he's treading carefully. He reaches out to an old nemesis, the arms dealer Brennen, who he's worked with in the past, hoping to get some information from him. But Brennen is not so eager to help Michael, and the two engage in a verbal confrontation.
Meanwhile, Fiona and Jesse are approached by a man named Kenny, who claims he was wrongfully accused of a crime and is now facing serious time in prison. He's desperate for their help, and the two of them agree to take on his case. Jesse starts off by doing some research on the case, and he discovers that the main witness against Kenny is a woman named Carmen. Fiona pays her a visit, but Carmen is intimidated and refuses to talk.
With no luck getting information from Carmen, Fiona and Jesse decide to try a more direct approach. They decide to get arrested and sent to the same prison as Kenny and try to get close to Carmen that way. But they'll need Michael's help to pull it off. Luckily for them, Michael has some experience with getting sent to prison (having been sent to a Russian prison in a previous season), so he's the perfect man for the job.
Michael agrees to help, and the three of them come up with a plan to get Fiona and Jesse arrested. They stage a brawl in a bar, and Fiona and Jesse are arrested and sent to the same prison as Kenny. Once there, they start to work on Carmen, hoping to convince her to change her story. But Carmen is not easily swayed, and she's not afraid to use violence to get what she wants.
Back on the outside, Michael's search for Anson leads him to a shady pawn shop owner named Mason Gilroy. Gilroy is a former spy who is now running a criminal empire, and he's not too keen on Michael nosing around. But Michael is determined to get the information he needs, and he starts to put the pressure on Gilroy. The two of them engage in a tense standoff, and Michael manages to get Gilroy to give up some information on Anson.
With the information he's gotten from Gilroy, Michael is one step closer to finding Anson and getting revenge for Max's death. But he knows that he needs to be careful, as Anson is not someone to be taken lightly.
Back in prison, Fiona and Jesse are having some success with Carmen, but they're running out of time. With Kenny's trial coming up, they need to find some concrete evidence to prove his innocence or else he'll be sent away for a long time. They discover that the real perpetrator of the crime was someone else entirely, and they rush to get the evidence they need to exonerate Kenny.
In the end, Fiona and Jesse are successful in getting the evidence they need, and Kenny is cleared of all charges. They're able to make it out of prison without incident, and they're relieved to be back in the outside world. Meanwhile, Michael's hunt for Anson continues, and he's more determined than ever to bring him down.
Overall, "Hard Time" is an intense episode that keeps the audience on the edge of their seats. The high-stakes prison storyline is a nice change of pace from the usual spy missions, and it's great to see Fiona and Jesse get some much-deserved screen time. The episode also does a good job of furthering the overarching storyline of Michael's hunt for Anson, and it leaves the audience eager to see what happens next.
