In season 4, episode 8 of Buffy The Vampire Slayer, titled "Pangs", Buffy is preparing to celebrate Thanksgiving with her friends when she is unexpectedly attacked by a group of vengeful spirits seeking revenge for the mistreatment of Native Americans in Sunnydale's past. Meanwhile, Xander inadvertently unleashes a swarm of dangerous and aggressive spirits when he decides to dig up a suspected hidden treasure on the site of an old mission dating back to the days of Spanish colonization. As the two threats converge, Buffy and her friends must race to stop the spirits before they can cause irreparable harm to those they care about.
The episode opens with Buffy and her friends decorating her house for Thanksgiving in honor of the first Thanksgiving. However, things quickly take a turn for the worse when Buffy is attacked by a mysterious spirit while carving a turkey. At the same time, Xander decides to investigate a mysterious map he found that leads him to an old mission site, where he discovers a mysterious artifact buried in the ground. As he begins to dig it up, a swarm of dangerous and vengeful spirits is unleashed, forcing Xander to flee for his life.
Despite Buffy's reluctance to believe in the supernatural cause of her attack, the evidence quickly begins to mount against her. Willow and Giles investigate the origin of the spirits and discover that they are the spirits of Native Americans who were massacred by the Spanish over 200 years ago. This prompts Buffy to have a vision of the past, which helps her understand the depth of the Native American's anger and urge for revenge.
Meanwhile, Xander realizes the danger he has unleashed and seeks out help from the rest of the Scooby gang. They devise a plan to capture the spirits and trap them in a box, but not before the spirits launch a vicious attack on the group, injuring several of Buffy's friends in the process. However, Buffy is ultimately able to use her powers to defeat the spirits and save her friends, although not without suffering a few injuries of her own.
Despite the danger they faced, Buffy and her friends still manage to come together and celebrate Thanksgiving, albeit with a greater understanding of the complex history and turmoil that has led them to this point. "Pangs" is a powerful episode that addresses issues of cultural appropriation, colonialism, and the lingering effects of historical trauma, while still delivering the witty banter and thrilling action that fans have come to expect from Buffy The Vampire Slayer.
