Ep 10. Planet of the Amazon Women
- November 8, 1979
In the 10th episode of Buck Rogers' first season, the space adventurer finds himself in the midst of a conflict between two groups of battling women on a far-off planet. The "Planet of the Amazon Women" features a society that is split between a matriarchal warrior race, the City-dwellers, led by Queen Huereta, and the more peaceful Hill-dwellers. Buck falls into the middle of their war when he crash-lands his starship on the planet, and becomes embroiled in a battle to save the hill-dwelling women from being captured and enslaved.
The episode opens with Buck, Colonel Wilma Deering, and Dr. Theopolis on a mission to recover materials needed to repair their spaceship. In the process, they come across the Planet of the Amazon Women during their search for a repair facility. The group is shocked to discover that the planet is inhabited solely by women, with no men in sight.
As Buck and his companions make their way through the planet's jungle to find a repair facility, they witness an intense battle between two groups of women; the matriarchal, militant City-dwellers, and the peaceful, more traditionally feminine Hill-dwellers. During the altercation, Buck is thrown into a pit, where he's forced to fight a savage animal to survive. After winning the fight, he's taken in by the Hill-dwellers, who hide him while he recuperates from his injuries.
Buck quickly learns that both groups of women are at odds with each other, due to their contrasting lifestyles and belief systems. The City-dwellers prioritize strength and power, while the Hill-dwellers value peacefulness, creativity, and egalitarianism. However, Buck is drawn to the women of the Hill-dwelling community- led by a wise, elder queen named Niolani- and he soon dedicates himself to their cause.
As the episode progresses, Buck attempts to bridge the divide between the two groups by seeking out Queen Huerta, the leader of the City-dwellers. He offers to work as her servant and, through some initial reluctance, is allowed to live at the City. During his stay with the City, he finds out that Queen Huerta has a hidden motivation to take over the Hill, and keep their women as slaves. Buck attempts to foil their plans with the help of the Hill, and bring peace between the two groups of women.
Throughout the episode, the viewer experiences thrilling action, drama, and a blend of science fiction and fantasy that make Buck Rogers the futuristic hero we all know and love. Buck Rogers' mission towards peace between two groups of clashing societies is reminiscent of real-world issues; thus, it is not only a classic sci-fi adventure but also an interesting social allegory.
As always, Buck Rogers' bravery and sense of justice prevail, and he emerges as both the hero of the day and the audience's favorite character. "Planet of the Amazon Women" provides a unique approach to a futuristic spacecraft show, with the introduction of such feminist themes, which is refreshing to see. The episode also offers a welcome commentary on the feminine role in the sci-fi genre and society at large.
Overall, "Planet of the Amazon Women" is a classic episode in the Buck Rogers franchise, delivering a unique, thrilling, and exciting storyline that's perfect for fans of action, science fiction, and drama.
