Detective Jake Peralta is in the ultimate race against time in the Brooklyn Nine-Nine season 5 episode 3 titled "Kicks." This episode explains how Jake is tasked with solving an art theft case before the heist is carried out. The stakes are high and he has to race against the clock to arrest the suspects.
At the beginning of the episode, Jake and his partner Rosa Diaz are seen investigating a robbery in a high-end shoe store. The robbers leave behind minimal evidence, and the case soon hits a dead end when the police department lacks resources. Jake, however, becomes obsessed with the case and even starts hallucinating about the suspects. He manages to get information about the suspects from a key suspect who is in prison for a different crime.
As the investigation progresses, Jake becomes convinced that a professional art thief named Doug Judy, who is also a close friend, might be involved in the heist. He convinces Judy to help him catch the perpetrators in exchange for shortening his sentence.
While Jake and Doug work towards nabbing the robbers, the rest of the Nine-Nine deals with the stresses and strains of life. Captain Raymond Holt is promoted to a new post of public affairs officer, while Gina Linetti, the precinct's civilian administrator, decides to resign to pursue her dreams.
The episode takes a wild turn when Jake's partner Rosa receives a phone call from a former girlfriend who had abandoned her three years ago. This call puts Rosa in an emotional state, and she seems to be struggling with the decision of whether to reconnect with her ex-girlfriend or move on with her life.
Meanwhile, Amy Santiago, Jake's girlfriend, is struggling to put together a "no stress" Thanksgiving party for the precinct. Her efforts, however, seem to turn out quite the opposite, with the detectives facing a turkey mishap and everyone feeling extreme stress.
As Jake and Judy's plan unfolds, the two are seen getting into all sorts of mischief, including riding through the city on bicycles, which they use to chase down suspects. Eventually, they are able to identify the culprits, but not before Jake takes on an undercover identity, and they work together to nail the art thieves and recover the stolen artifacts.
As the episode comes to a close, the Nine-Nine precinct completes their Thanksgiving slumber party, solving the shoe store and art theft case simultaneously. Jake pulls off an amazing prank, while Rosa makes her decision about her ex-girlfriend and Gina's aspirations remain unknown.
Overall, the "Kicks" episode is an absolute delight to watch with its mix of humor, emotion, and a thriller-esque plotline. Fans of the series are sure to relish in the ongoing plot development and the neat tie-ups towards the end.
