Broken Blade is a twelve-episode anime series adaptation of a manga written by Yunosuke Yoshinaga. The series first aired in April 2010 and is produced by Xebec. It is a fantasy, action, and mecha genre set in a fictional world where magic and technology coexist. The setting of the show is on the continent called Cruzon, which is divided into two warring nations, Athens and Krisna.

The story revolves around a young man named Rygart Arrow, who is the only person left in his homeland known as the Kingdom of Krishna that cannot use magic. His childhood friends, Hodr and Sigyn, who are members of the Krisna Royal Family, pay him a surprise visit in hopes of persuading him to join their side in the war between Athens and Krisna. However, Rygart is a pacifist and refuses them. Later on, he finds out that their kingdom is in danger of losing the impending war because of the lack of skilled pilots of the golem robots, which will be the key to winning the war.

As it turns out, Rygart is the only person who can pilot the ancient type of golem called the Delphine. It is said that the Delphine was created by Rygart's ancestors and can only be piloted by someone without magical abilities. Rygart decides to help Krisna with the hopes of protecting his friends and helping the kingdom. He begins his training, not knowing that he will play a bigger role in the war and in changing the course of the world's history.

The show boasts impressive animation, especially the mecha fights scenes, which are designed and animated exceptionally well. The characters and settings are also beautifully drawn, and the soundtrack complements the action-packed scenes. The series is a good balance of action and character development without losing its focus on the main storyline. It explores complex themes such as loyalty, friendship, and duty to one's country.

What sets Broken Blade apart from other mecha anime is its unique take on the genre. Instead of basing the mecha's power on technology or the pilot's skill, it is powered by magic. The golems are equipped with Quartz, which is a magical crystal that enables the weapon to move and the pilot to control it. The gems can be converted into a power source for the moving the golems at high speeds and amplifying their strength.

Another unique aspect of the show is the character development of Rygart. He is the only character without magic in a world where it is considered a sign of superiority. He is often looked down upon and bullied because of his lack of abilities and his peaceful nature. However, Rygart is never portrayed as weak. Instead, his bravery, determination, and intelligence shine through in pivotal scenes and battles. The series also focuses on the relationships between siblings, which is unusual in this genre. However, the relationship of Hodr and Sigyn and their interactions with each other and Rygart is a highlight of the show.

Overall, Broken Blade is an engaging anime series that deftly combines magic and mecha genres to create an entirely different and unique experience for the viewers. The well-animated action scenes, compelling story, and relatable characters make it a must-watch for any anime enthusiast.
