In the second episode of Britain's Best Bakery season 1, the focus shifts to the southwestern counties of Cornwall and Devon, both known for their rich culinary heritage. Our two judges, Mich Turner and Peter Sidwell, travel through the picturesque countryside, visiting local bakeries and trying out some of the most delicious baked goods the region has to offer.
Their first stop is The Cornish Bakery in Truro, where they sample traditional Cornish pasties, one of the signature baked goods of the county. The judges are impressed with the perfect balance of flavors in the pasties, and the texture of the pastry is just right. The owners also showcase some new twists on the classic pasty, including a vegan version and a spicy chicken one.
Next, the judges travel to Padstow, home to the famous Rick Stein's bakery. Here, they try out some of the bakery's bestsellers, including the local favorite, the Cornish saffron bun. They also get to witness the bakery's daily operations, with its skilled bakers working tirelessly to produce fresh bread and pastries.
Moving on to Devon, the judges visit Ottery St. Mary, where they meet the team at the Rusty Pig Bakery. The bakery prides itself on using locally sourced ingredients, including their own home-reared pigs, to create unique and delicious baked goods. The judges try out some of their specialties, including sausage rolls, pork pies, and a sweet and savory combo of scones and chutney.
At the Honiton Bakery, the judges get a chance to sample the bakery's award-winning artisan bread. They are impressed with the range of flavors on offer, from classic sourdough to more experimental options like beetroot and rosemary. The bakery also showcases some beautiful pastries, including colorful macarons and delicate mille-feuilles.
Finally, the judges visit The Exploding Bakery in Exeter, where they are blown away by the array of treats on display. The bakery is known for its inventive flavor combinations, and the judges try some of their most unique offerings, including a ginger and miso brownie and a blueberry and lemon Danish.
After a whirlwind tour of some of the best bakeries in Cornwall and Devon, the judges have a difficult decision to make. Each bakery has something special to offer, but only one can be crowned the winner of this episode. Will it be the traditional flavors of The Cornish Bakery, the locally sourced ingredients of Rusty Pig, or the inventive creations of The Exploding Bakery? Tune in to find out!
