As Brat Loves Judy kicks off its first season with episode one, titled "On the DL," viewers are introduced to the dynamic between rapper Da Brat and her fiancée, Jesseca Dupart, also known as Judy. The couple, who got engaged in March 2020, are ready to share their love story with the world.
The episode opens with Da Brat, whose real name is Shawntae Harris, in her hometown of Chicago. She quickly addresses her past legal troubles, including a 2007 arrest for assault and battery. "It's still hard for me to talk about it 'cause it's a really, really dark time in my life," she shares. "But I got through it and I'm still here."
Despite her troubled past, Da Brat is excited to show off her city to Judy, who hails from New Orleans. "I want to show Judy the hood, the struggle," she says. "I want her to see exactly where I come from, so she can understand me on a deeper level."
As Da Brat takes Judy on a tour of her old neighborhood, the couple's love shines through in their playful banter and sweet moments. "I just feel like she gets me and sees me for who I am," Da Brat gushes.
But their trip takes a serious turn when Da Brat reveals that she hasn't come out as a lesbian to some of her family members, including her grandmother. "I'm nervous that my family won't accept Judy," she admits. "I've been keeping her on the DL, but I don't want to do that anymore."
Judy, who is openly bisexual, is supportive of Da Brat's decision to come out to her family. "I'm just here for her, and I know it's gonna be tough, but we can get through it together," she says.
Later, the couple heads to a recording studio, where Da Brat is working on new music. She reveals that she hasn't released an album in over 10 years, but is excited to get back in the game. "Music is my therapy," she shares. "It's how I express myself, and my fans have been waiting for me to drop something new."
As Da Brat records her new track, she opens up about the challenges she faces in the industry as a female rapper. "It's harder for women in hip hop," she says. "There's so much competition and you have to work twice as hard to get ahead."
But with Judy by her side, Da Brat feels ready to take on anything. "She's my secret weapon," she says with a smile.
The episode ends with Da Brat's family gathering for a barbecue, where she plans to come out to her grandmother. Before the big reveal, she pulls Judy aside for a heart-to-heart conversation.
"I just want you to know that I love you and I appreciate you," Da Brat tells her fiancée. "You make me feel so loved and supported, and I don't know what I would do without you."
Judy replies, "I'm not going anywhere. I'm always gonna be here for you."
With that, Da Brat takes a deep breath and heads over to her family. The episode cuts to black before we see her come out, leaving viewers eager to tune in for the next episode and see how it all plays out.
Overall, "On the DL" sets the stage for what promises to be a heartfelt and empowering love story between two women navigating their way through fame, family, and the music industry.
