Boys Before Flowers, also known as Boys Over Flowers, is a South Korean TV drama in the genre of romantic comedy. The series stars Ku Hye-sun as the female protagonist Guem Jan Di, who is a poor but independent and courageous high school student. In the opening scenes of the series, ShinHwa Group is described as a South Korean conglomerate that owns a vast portion of venues in Korea, including various businesses in the corporate, food, clothing and consumer electronics markets. The premier educational facility in the country, ShinHwa High School, is primarily reserved for people who are well-off, whose parents have made names for themselves. For Jan Di, her living situation is such that she would never dream to be more than a commoner, let alone attend a fancy school where the tuition is far more than her parents make in a year.

All that changes when Jan Di is sent out on an errand to deliver clean clothes to a client of her father's dry-cleaning business, and encounters a large crowd of teenagers bullying a ShinHwa student to the point of rooftop suicide. She saves the boy from imminent death with her strong arm muscles, which have been built up from years of toil as a commoner. In the hours and days immediately afterward, Jan Di is hailed as a hero by various forms of media, and the president of ShinHwa Group issues her a scholarship to ShinHwa High in an attempt to avoid the bad publicity the event caused.

Upon Jan Di's entrance into ShinHwa High School, she is looked down upon by most of the students as not being rich enough or classy enough to attend ShinHwa, including the members of the group F4. F4, as she learns, is the group of the four richest and hottest young men attending ShinHwa. The group is composed of big bad Goo Jun Pyo, heir of ShinHwa Group and portrayed by Lee Min Ho, Kim Hyun Joong's character of soft-spoken, gentle Yoon Ji Hoo, aristic playboy So Yi Jung, played by Kim Bum, and Kim Joon as ladies' man Song Woo Bin. They are idolized by the entire school and do whatever they want because of their positions as high society.

However, when Oh Min Ji, Jan Di's only friend at school, is the subject of their bullying, Jan Di stands up to leader Jun Pyo and grabs the attention of the entire group. Eventually, the rivalry between Jun Pyo and Jan Di turns into attraction - but Jan Di has feelings for Ji Hoo, as well! Ultimately, the key points addressed in the series are where Jan Di's affections lie, and how she and whom she ends up choosing overcome obstacles threatening their love together - with a little help from their friends.

Boys Before Flowers aired on the Korean network KBS2 in 2009. The 25 episodes had a run time of 60 to 68 minutes in length and the script, written by Yoon Ji Ryun, was based on the Japanese manga Hana Yori Dango.
