In the third episode of the first season of the acclaimed British sitcom "Bottom," titled "Contest," the two main characters, Richard Richard (Rik Mayall) and Edward Elizabeth Hitler, better known as "Eddie" (Adrian Edmondson), find themselves broke and hungry with no food in the house. As they search through Eddie's belongings, they discover an old collection of magazines filled with erotic pictures of women.
This discovery leads to a heated argument over who is the better-looking of the two, and they decide to settle the argument through a series of challenges. The challenges vary from physical tests of strength to mental games of skill, but always end with both of them getting up to their usual anarchic antics.
As the competition heats up, their apartments become a disaster zone with destruction and debris everywhere. The duo even accidentally blow up their kitchen in one of their challenges.
As the day wears on, the challenges become more absurd and bizarre, with the two men engaging in a variety of ridiculous activities such as jumping over a clothesline and eating cheese while dangling from a window.
But as the competition reaches its climax, it becomes clear that neither of them can declare themselves the true winner of the contest. They finally decide to end the contest by declaring a tie, and both men go to bed exhausted and hungry.
Despite the chaos and destruction that ensues, it is clear that the two main characters are the best of friends and willing to go to great lengths to entertain each other. The episode showcases the comedic talent of Rik Mayall and Adrian Edmondson, and their ability to play off each other in a way that almost seems improvisational.
Overall, "Contest" is a hilarious episode that perfectly captures the unique humor of "Bottom" and highlights the bond between the two friends at the heart of the show.
