Since the introduction of plastic surgery, the rise in patients wanting to enhance their bodies has skyrocketed. Botched is a reality TV series that follows two of the most reputable plastic surgeons in Beverly Hills, Dr. Terry Dubrow and Dr. Paul Nassif, as they try to fix botched plastic surgeries.
In season 2 episode 10 titled "Attack of the 3,000cc Implants," the doctors encounter two women who have gone overboard with their breast enhancements. The first patient is Cassandra, a 27-year-old woman who was convinced by her doctor to get the largest breast implants possible. She went from her natural A-cup size to a 3,000cc implant - which is three times the recommended size. However, her post-surgery life hasn't been easy as the implants have caused her constant back pain and hindered her mobility.
The second patient is Vanity, a mother of two who also went to a different plastic surgeon and got the same 3,000cc implant. Her reason for getting the surgery was that she wanted breasts larger than her friend who had 2,500cc implants. Since then, she has gone under the knife three more times to try and correct the botched surgery but to no avail. Her breasts have become misshapen and painful, and she now hates them.
As both women consult with Dr. Dubrow and Dr. Nassif, it becomes clear that their decision to get the largest implant possible is a sign of body dysmorphic disorder - a mental illness that causes people to be obsessed with perceived flaws in their appearance. The doctors must determine if they can remove the implants and repair the damage without affecting their overall health. On examination, they discover that both women's implants have over-stretched their skin and have caused damage to their breast tissue.
The operation is risky as the removal of such large implants and the surrounding scar tissue requires a delicate touch. The doctors must be careful not only to preserve the women's breast tissue but also to ensure they are aesthetically pleasing to give the women their confidence back. Dr. Dubrow and Dr. Nassif perform a reduction surgery that also involves a lifting procedure.
The next day, both patients seem to be recovering well, but there's a problem. Half a day after surgery, one of Cassandra's breasts becomes swollen and painful. This complication could indicate an infection or internal bleeding, and the doctors perform an emergency surgery to remove the implant.
In the end, both patients do recover, and they feel more confident and less self-conscious. The surgery's success also gives them relief from the constant back pain, which means they can engage in daily activities like before. They said that Dr. Dubrow and Dr. Nassif had changed their lives, and one of the patients even revealed that she could now hold her children without any hindrance.
Botched season 2 episode 10 showed that there is a fine line to being satisfied with one's appearance and becoming obsessed with it. It's crucial to consult reputable and experienced plastic surgeons and to be wary of those who promise you the world but don't disclose the reality of plastic surgery.
