Ep 12. Nuts

During the 12th episode of the third season of Boston Legal titled “Nuts,” the spotlight shines on Denise Bauer (Julie Bowen) as she represents a woman named Nanette Bowden (Marcia Gay Harden) in a court case. Nanette, who is a famous professor, has been charged with indecent exposure after she took off all her clothes during a lecture.

The case puts Denise in a challenging position given how high-profile Nanette is, and her reputation is at stake. However, after questioning her client, Denise discovers a shocking reason behind her disrobing. Nanette did it because she has a condition called hypersexuality, which drives her to have an intense desire for sex.

Nanette’s hypersexuality makes her act out in inappropriate ways, and her career is at risk of being destroyed. Denise tries to plead insanity to argue her case, but the prosecutor has a strong argument against them. Therefore, Denise enlists Brad Chase (Mark Valley) and Alan Shore (James Spader) to the case.

Meanwhile, the episode takes a personal turn for Denny Crane (William Shatner), who has discovered that he has Asperger’s syndrome. He is struggling to come to terms with his new diagnosis and seeks help from his therapist and close friend, Shirley Schmidt (Candice Bergen). Denny’s behavior becomes erratic and uncharacteristic, and he has a tough time controlling his impulses.

Shirley worries that his new diagnosis might interfere with his ability to practice law and takes it upon herself to inform the partners at the firm. The partners are wary and begin to question if Denny is fit to conduct himself professionally in the courtroom.

In the meantime, Denise continues to represent Nanette, and as the trial proceeds, her behavior worsens, and Denise struggles to control Nanette’s outbursts. The trial drags on, and it seems as though Denise’s strategy of pleading insanity might not work.

Alan, sensing Denise’s desperation, takes it upon himself to cross-examine the prosecution's witness and reveals a secret that could put the case in their favor. Alan’s revelation alters the course of the trial and offers hope for Nanette and Denise.

The episode comes to a head when the closing arguments are delivered, and all parties put forth their strongest arguments. The verdict is delivered, and Nanette’s fate hangs in the balance.

The episode ends on a somber note for Denny, who finds out that his Asperger’s syndrome diagnosis is not covered by his insurance, and he will have to pay crushing medical bills out of pocket. However, the episode concludes with a glimmer of hope for Nanette, who, with Denise's help, may find a way to lead a normal life.
