Bookaboo is a Canadian children's television series that follows a rockstar puppy named Bookaboo who needs a story a day to keep his page fright at bay. Each episode features a different celebrity guest who reads a book to Bookaboo and the audience to help the puppy overcome his fear and perform a live concert. In season 1 episode 3, the featured books are "Shifty McGifty and Slippery Sam, The Cat Burglar" by Tracey Corderoy and Steven Lenton, and "Little Red and the Very Hungry Lion" by Alex T. Smith.
In "Shifty McGifty and Slippery Sam, The Cat Burglar," the audience gets to meet two lovable dog characters, Shifty McGifty and Slippery Sam, who went from a life of crime to becoming bakers. But when they see a sign for a baking contest with a prize of a golden cupcake, their love for baking and competition puts them in a tough spot. To make matters worse, a notorious thief, the notorious cat burglar, steals the cupcake before they can enter the contest. With the help of their friends, Shifty and Sam attempt to catch the thief and retrieve the prize.
The second featured book, "Little Red and the Very Hungry Lion," is a retelling of the classic tale of Little Red Riding Hood with a few surprises. Little Red is a smart and savvy girl who knows how to handle herself and take care of her grandma. But when she meets a very hungry lion on her way to grandma's house, she uses her quick wit and charm to outsmart him and help him find a happier and more suitable meal.
Throughout the episode, Bookaboo struggles with his page fright as he prepares for his concert. Each time he tries to perform, he freezes up, unable to play his drums and sing. With the help of Bruce Greenwood, the celebrity guest, and the fun and engaging story of Shifty and Sam, Bookaboo learns that everyone gets scared sometimes, but it's important to push through and do the things you love. By the end of the episode, Bookaboo is able to overcome his fear and give an incredible concert for his adoring fans.
"Bookaboo" is a fantastic show that encourages kids to read and explore new stories in a fun and entertaining way. The unique concept of a rockstar puppy with page fright adds an extra layer of relatability for kids who might also struggle with nerves or anxiety. The celebrity guests are engaging and provide excellent performances, and the books themselves are engaging and fun for both kids and adults. This episode, in particular, is a great introduction to the world of Shifty McGifty and Slippery Sam and Little Red Riding Hood, while also delivering an important lesson about facing fears and pursuing one's passions.
