The Book of Mormon Videos retells the story of the Book of Mormon, a religious narrative of events that took place in the ancient Americas. Season 2 episode 7, named Sherem Denies Christ, continues the story of Nephi and Jacob's teachings to the Nephites.
The episode begins with Nephi and Jacob continuing to preach to the Nephites in Zarahemla. Nephi, who is now an old man, delivers a powerful sermon to the people, reminding them of the teachings of the prophets who came before him. He highlights the importance of having faith in Jesus Christ, and the role that repentance plays in achieving salvation.
After Nephi concludes his sermon, another man named Sherem approaches him. Sherem is a learned man who argues that the people should not believe in Christ, and instead should rely on their own wisdom and understanding. He challenges Nephi to show him a sign to prove that Christ is real, but Nephi responds that "the Lord God worketh not in darkness".
Sherem continues to argue against Christ, and even accuses Nephi of leading the people astray through false teachings. Nephi responds by testifying of his own experiences with Christ, and the blessings that have come from following His teachings. He also reminds Sherem of the prophets who came before him, and how they too testified of Christ.
Despite Nephi's efforts, Sherem remains obstinate in his disbelief. He then falls to the ground, apparently dead. The people are shocked, and some even begin to believe that Nephi has the power of God. However, Nephi corrects them, saying that Sherem's death was not a punishment from God, but rather a natural consequence of his own pride and arrogance.
The episode ends with Nephi and Jacob continuing to preach to the people, teaching them about Christ and the importance of faith and repentance. While Sherem's rejection of Christ may seem like a small setback, their teachings are beginning to take hold among the Nephites, and the seed of Christ's gospel is being planted in their hearts.
Overall, Sherem Denies Christ is a powerful episode that explores the nature of faith and the dangers of pride and arrogance. It teaches us that even learned men can become blinded by their own understanding, and that true wisdom comes through humility and seeking the truth in faith.
