The episode titled "The Dark Past" opens with the Cartwrights in Virginia City, Nevada, buying supplies for the ranch. Adam Cartwright enters the local saloon to get a whiskey, where he's soon met by an old friend, a gunslinger named Dave Walker, who's on the run from the law. Dave and Adam discuss old times and share drinks, but Dave is clearly hiding something and is nervous throughout their conversation.
Meanwhile, the other Cartwrights, Ben, Hoss, and Little Joe, head out of town when they hear of a band of robbers who are terrorizing the region. They set out to find the robbers and bring them to justice.
As the episode progresses, the Cartwrights learn that Dave is wanted for the murder of a man in a nearby town. Adam, who believes in Dave's innocence, tries to convince him to turn himself in, knowing that running from the law will only make things worse. But Dave, who insists that he's been framed for the murder, refuses to go back to town and face the authorities.
As the Cartwrights continue their pursuit of the robbers, they come across a group of Mexican bandits who are also looking for the same group. The two groups join forces and manage to capture the robbers, but in the process, some of them are injured and need medical attention.
This leads the group to a nearby abandoned mining town where they can tend to their wounds. As they rest and recuperate, tensions rise between Dave and the Cartwrights, particularly Adam, who becomes increasingly frustrated with Dave's refusal to turn himself in. The Cartwrights begin to question whether or not their old friend is as innocent as he claims to be.
As the band of vigilantes grows stronger, Dave becomes more and more nervous, and it becomes clear that he's hiding something. When the truth finally comes out, it's more shocking than anyone could have imagined, and the Cartwrights find themselves facing a difficult decision that could change the course of their lives forever.
In the end, justice is served, but not before the Cartwrights and their Mexican allies must confront the dark secrets of their pasts and make some difficult choices about their future. The episode is a gripping exploration of justice, friendship, and the power of redemption, and a fitting addition to the Bonanza series.
