Adam Cartwright, one of the sons of the patriarch Ben Cartwright, decides to leave the Ponderosa to pursue his dream of becoming an architect. Before he leaves, he visits the local barbershop run by Floyd, who has been cutting the Cartwrights' hair for years. Floyd admits that he has been experiencing tremors in his hand and is afraid that he may not be able to continue cutting hair. Adam suggests that Floyd see a doctor, but Floyd is reluctant because he is afraid of what the diagnosis may be.

Meanwhile, a group of outlaws led by a notorious bandit named Jedediah Milbank arrives in town. Milbank's gang has been terrorizing the area, robbing banks and stagecoaches and leaving a trail of destruction in their wake. Their next target is the bank in Virginia City, and Milbank has devised a plan to cut off the telegraph wires so that no one can call for help.

When Adam overhears Milbank's plan, he realizes that he needs to warn his family and the other townspeople. However, Milbank and his gang catch up to Adam, and there is a shootout. Adam manages to escape but is injured in the process.

When Adam returns to Virginia City, he goes to Floyd's barbershop to get his wounds treated. However, he discovers that Milbank and his gang have taken over the barbershop and are holding Floyd and the other customers hostage. Milbank has a plan to use the barbershop as a hiding place until the coast is clear.

Adam realizes that he needs to come up with a plan to protect Floyd and the other hostages and to stop Milbank and his gang. He enlists the help of Sheriff Coffee and other members of the community to set a trap for the outlaws.

In the meantime, Floyd reveals to Adam that he has a secret past as a sharpshooter and that he can still shoot straight despite his tremors. Adam convinces Floyd to use his skills to help defend the barbershop and rescue the hostages.

The final showdown between Adam, Floyd, and the outlaws takes place inside the barbershop. It is a tense and suspenseful scene, with bullets flying and hair clippers buzzing. In the end, justice prevails, and Milbank and his gang are brought to justice.

The episode ends with Adam saying goodbye to his family and to Floyd, who has decided to retire from cutting hair and to use his sharpshooting skills to help protect the town. It is a bittersweet moment, as Adam must leave the Ponderosa to pursue his dreams, but also a moment of hope as the town is made safer by the actions of its brave citizens.
