Bobcat Goldthwait's Misfits & Monsters is an imaginative anthology series that takes classic tales and remixes them into unique and often surreal stories. In season 1 episode 1, titled "Bubba The Bear," we are introduced to a world where animals can talk and live amongst humans.
The episode centers around a struggling stand-up comedian named Ronny (played by comedian Davey Johnson) who finds himself in a bit of a rut. He's recently gone through a breakup and his comedy career isn't taking off the way he had hoped. But his luck seems to change when he meets an incredibly talented bear named Bubba (voiced by Bobcat Goldthwait).
Bubba is not your average bear - he's hilarious and has a natural stage presence. Ronny sees this as the break he's been waiting for and offers to manage Bubba's career. The two become fast friends and partners in the comedy scene, with Ronny booking gigs for them and Bubba stealing the show with his comedic genius.
However, things take a turn when Bubba starts to become more than just a talking bear. He begins to show signs of aggression and a thirst for human blood, leaving Ronny to wonder what he's gotten himself into. As Ronny tries to unravel the mystery of what's happening to his best friend, he starts to question whether Bubba was ever really the lovable comedian he thought he was.
As with all episodes of Bobcat Goldthwait's Misfits & Monsters, "Bubba The Bear" takes a classic concept and turns it on its head. The idea of a talking animal may seem playful and innocent, but this episode shows the darker side of what that could mean. Along with the underlying themes, the episode is laugh-out-loud funny and features some excellent comedic performances.
Overall, "Bubba The Bear" is a strong premiere episode for the series. It sets the tone for the rest of the season and showcases the unique and twisted storytelling that viewers can expect from Bobcat Goldthwait's Misfits & Monsters.
