In season 29 episode 1, the episode is named Island in the Wilderness.
In this episode, Bob Ross takes us to the wilderness of Alaska to paint the beauty of an island on canvas. Bob starts by painting the sky with a mixture of blue and white on his canvas, using a soft brush to create a smooth and even appearance. He continues by adding a little bit of pink, purple, and yellow to the edges of the sky and blends it all to make it look natural.
Next, Bob paints the distant mountain range in the background, using a large brush to create the misty appearance. As he moves to the foreground, he paints trees that are a little closer with dark green and some lighter shades of green with a fan brush, making those trees stand out. He often talks about his love for trees and how they give him peace and tranquility.
After the trees, Bob Ross starts working on the water on his canvas. He paints the water with a mixture of blue and white, creating a reflective appearance that gives depth to his painting. Then, he uses a fan brush with darker hues of blue to paint the details of waves and so the waves have a bit of an agitated appearance, which gives realism to the painting. He then adds the foam of the waves with the matte white to add texture and make the waves appear realistic.
Bob Ross’s painting style is known for the way he creates details, and in this episode, he showcases his skill as he paints the light reflecting on the water's surface. He adds highlights using a dabbing motion with a thin brush to build the details in the light reflections, which makes the painting shine.
As Bob completes the painting, he adds little details that make his painting more realistic, like a little boat that crosses the island in the foreground. He also adds a little campfire on the island, and a flock of Seagulls flying overhead. These little tiny details give lifelike personality to the painting.
All throughout the show, Bob Ross's calm demeanor and soothing voiceover make the viewer feel as though they are absorbing not only painting techniques but also a sense of spiritual wellness and calmness. It is not only an art show, but also a show that depicts meditation, relaxation, and solitude.
