Bob Hearts Abishola is a sitcom that follows the story of a middle-aged compression sock businessman, Bob, who falls for his cardiac nurse, Abishola, an immigrant from Nigeria. In season 1 episode 20, "Randy's a Wrangler," the scene opens up with Bob and his co-worker Douglas discussing an upcoming trip they plan to take to the rodeo. Bob is not particularly excited about going and admits to Douglas that he's never been to one before. Meanwhile, Abishola's son Dele convinces her to buy him a video game, "Randy's Wranglers," even though she's hesitant to indulge his request.
At the rodeo, Bob and Douglas are out of place and completely unaware of the events surrounding them. They end up being saved by a cowboy, Randy, who takes them under his wing and teaches them about the rodeo. As Bob becomes more and more enamored with the culture, he decides to buy a cowboy hat and boots and attend the event dressed head to toe in appropriate western wear. Douglas, on the other hand, decides to take a break for a while and sit out on the sidelines.
While Bob is at the rodeo, Abishola has a busy afternoon at the hospital, taking care of all her patients. When she catches a break, she decides to play the video game Dele begged her for earlier in the day. As she begins to play, Abishola quickly becomes addicted, and before she knows it, she's been playing for hours.
Back at the rodeo, Randy tells Bob and Douglas that he's going to introduce them to some of the cowboys, and he does. Bob gets very excited to meet the cowboys but soon starts to feel uncomfortable when he overhears them using homophobic slurs. Bob can't believe that they're using language like that and soon realizes that the western culture he's been so enamored with isn't as he had hoped.
Meanwhile, Abishola continues to play the video game until Dele comes home and catches her. She tries to explain that she was just playing to try to better understand her son, but Dele doesn't believe her and accuses her of trying to replace him with a video game. Abishola is heartbroken by this and begins to feel guilty for not spending enough time with her son.
Back at the rodeo, Bob has a conversation with Randy, who explains that he's been working at the rodeo for years and just got used to the language. Bob tells him that he doesn't think it's right and begins to question his own judgment for wanting to participate earlier in the day. Ultimately, Bob decides to leave the rodeo, and Randy wishes him good luck.
In the end, Abishola and Dele reconcile and Dele explains to his mother how to play the game properly. She finally gets the hang of the game and bonds with her son over it. The episode ends with Bob telling Abishola about his experience at the rodeo and how he wants to learn more about the cowboy culture in a way that's respectful to everyone.
Overall, Bob Hearts Abishola season 1 episode 20 was an episode about trying to understand and appreciate different cultures while still being aware of what's right and wrong. It was also a story about the bond between a mother and son and the struggles they face when trying to connect.
