As prohibition begins to ramp up in Atlantic City, the tension between the different factions involved in the bootlegging industry becomes more pronounced. In this episode, titled "Broadway Limited," we see Nucky dealing with a new shipment of booze, smuggled in from New York by Al Capone's crew. But when an unexpected set of events puts Nucky in the crosshairs of a powerful rival, he must use all of his wits to try and stay one step ahead of the game.
Meanwhile, we get an intimate look at some of the other players in this complex web of intrigue. Jimmy Darmody, a World War I veteran who is working under Nucky's wing, is struggling with PTSD and trying to figure out how to make ends meet for himself and his family. He forms an unlikely alliance with a fellow veteran, Richard Harrow, whose own gruesome experiences in the war have left him badly disfigured and struggling to find a place in society.
As Nucky navigates the treacherous waters of the bootlegging business, he also has to deal with the challenges of his personal life. He's still entangled with Margaret Schroeder, a woman whose husband he had killed in the previous episode, and he's trying to keep up appearances in the face of a mounting investigation by a zealous young agent from the Bureau of Prohibition.
The tension in "Broadway Limited" is palpable, as each character struggles to make their way in a world that is rapidly changing around them. As the episode builds to a tense climax, we see the lines being drawn for a larger conflict that will come to define the entire first season of Boardwalk Empire. With expert writing, stylish direction, and terrific performances from an all-star cast, this episode is a must-see for fans of the show.
