Blue's Clues season 5 episode 23, titled "I Did That!", follows the beloved blue puppy and her human friend Steve as they solve another mystery. In this episode, Steve introduces the concept of responsibility and accountability to young viewers.
The episode opens with Steve and Blue sitting on the living room floor surrounded by problem-solving tools - a handy dandy notebook, a crayon, and of course, Blue's paw prints. Steve introduces the first clue which is a picture of Blue holding a watering can. He immediately recognizes it as a clue to remind them to water the plants.
As they head outdoors to water the plants, Steve reminds viewers that taking care of plants is a responsibility. He explains that if we have a responsibility, we need to take care of it, and that means doing our part. Steve points out to Blue that she is responsible for watering the plants, and she nods back enthusiastically. As they go on watering the plants, Steve emphasizes the importance of taking responsibility for our actions and doing what needs to be done.
Next, Steve notices a blue splotch on the living room wall while he was giving Blue her daily tickle. He shows it to Blue and identifies it as the second clue. Steve wonders aloud what it could be and asks viewers if they saw anything blue that might have caused the splotch on the wall.
As they investigate and follow Blue's paw prints to the kitchen, Steve asks Blue if she remembers doing anything blue there. They both notice a blue handprint on the counter, and Steve quickly puts two and two together. He explains to Blue that she accidentally touched the wall with her blue hand while she was getting her snack. Steve doesn't get mad or scold Blue, but instead calmly reminds her that she needs to be responsible for her actions and clean up the mess that she made.
Together they clean the splotch using soap and water and Steve reiterates that mistakes happen, but it's important to admit our mistakes and take responsibility for them so we can fix them.
The final clue is a picture of Blue's ball, and as they enter the backyard to retrieve the ball, they encounter their neighbor Fred struggling to move a fallen tree branch from his yard. Steve notices that Fred's struggling and asks if he could help. Seeing Steve's kindness and sense of responsibility, Blue follows suit and starts to help as well.
Together, Steve, Blue, and Fred move the branch, and Fred thanks the duo for their help. Steve explains to Blue that helping your neighbors is another kind of responsibility and that people who are responsible look for ways to help others, especially when they need it.
The episode ends with Steve summarizing the different ways that Blue and viewers can take responsibility in their daily lives, such as taking care of plants and pets, cleaning up after themselves, and helping others.
