In the opening episode of season 3 of Blue Heelers, titled "Protected Species", we see the cast dealing with a case of animal cruelty which leads to a deeper investigation.
Constable Tom Croydon (John Wood), Senior Constable Nick Schultz (Martin Sacks), and Constable Kelly O'Rourke (Deborah Kennedy) are called to a property in Mount Thomas where they come across a dead kangaroo. The kangaroo had been shot and it appeared as if its legs had been hacked off. The situation soon becomes worse when they discover a second kangaroo in the same condition.
The cast investigates the situation, and soon discover that the killings are part of a larger scheme. Someone has been poaching protected wildlife, including wombats, dugongs, and turtles, with the aim of selling them on the black market. After some investigation, the team traces the poachers to local fishermen who have been killing dugongs and turtles in order to sell their meat overseas, while the dead animals were being discarded in the local forest.
As the investigation continues, the cast must determine how to catch the poachers without harming the animals themselves. They soon come up with a plan to use a drone-mounted camera to observe and record the poachers in the act.
As the investigation unfolds, we see glimpses into the personal lives of the main cast. Tom Croydon is still dealing with the after-effects of his wife's death, while Nick Schultz struggles with the emotional impact of the case, knowing that the protected animals could face a grim demise at the hands of the poachers.
The episode ends with the team apprehending the culprits, and the animals are rescued and sent to a sanctuary where they can be looked after.
Overall, "Protected Species" is a strong start to the third season of Blue Heelers. The episode blends action and suspense with heartfelt moments and touches of humor. The cast do an excellent job of bringing their characters to life, and the use of the drone-mounted camera serves as a unique and interesting plot device. Those who are fans of the show will be pleased with the season opener, and newcomers will find it to be a great introduction to the series.
