In Blue Gender season 1 episode 3, titled "Trial," the show's protagonist Yuji and his fellow sleepers finally arrive at the Second Earth's base headquarters following their rescue from a group of giant insects known as the Blue. The group is immediately met with hostility from the base's leadership, known as The Council, who view the sleepers as a burden on their limited resources. The Council forces Yuji and the other sleepers to undergo a series of physical and psychological tests to determine if they are truly fit to serve on the front lines of the war against the Blue.
As Yuji and the sleepers undergo the rigorous tests, they begin to uncover unsettling truths about the Council's motives and the war against the Blue. Yuji's suspicions are confirmed when he discovers that the base's leadership has been experimenting on their own soldiers to create new weapons to fight the Blue. The revelations lead to a dangerous confrontation between Yuji and the Council.
Meanwhile, Yuji's love interest Marlene struggles to come to terms with her feelings for him. She finds herself conflicted between her duty to protect the sleepers and her loyalty to the Council. Marlene's internal struggle is further complicated when she is assigned to lead a mission to retrieve a powerful weapon from a Blue hive.
