The Blue Exorcist season 1 episode 16 titled The Wager opens with the students of True Cross Academy anxiously waiting for their test results. Rin, the show's main protagonist, is worried about his performance since he struggled to complete the written test. However, he is relieved to discover that he passed it.
After the results are announced, Yukio, Rin's twin brother, suggests that they take part in a gambling tournament to earn some extra money. Rin initially refuses, but Yukio convinces him to participate by explaining that they can use the winnings to buy new textbooks and other equipment for their exorcism training.
The tournament involves playing a game called Concentration, where participants have to match pairs of cards with different images on them. Rin and Yukio team up with two other classmates, Suguro and Konekomaru, to enter the tournament. The stakes are high as the winning team will receive a large sum of money.
As the tournament progresses, Rin realizes that he has a natural talent for the game. The team is doing well, and they have managed to get through to the final round. However, their opponents turn out to be a group of exorcists who are cheating by using their demon powers to manipulate the cards.
Rin is disappointed that the exorcists would cheat in a game that's supposed to be a fair competition. He decides to confront them, and the two groups end up having a heated argument. During the argument, Rin reveals that he is the son of Satan. The other exorcists are shocked and horrified by this revelation, and they accuse Rin of being a demon in disguise. Rin is hurt by their accusations and storms out of the tournament.
Meanwhile, a demon named Gufu has been causing trouble in the city. The exorcists who had been cheating in the tournament were actually trying to win money to hire a mercenary to deal with Gufu. However, Rin's confrontation with them has disrupted their plans, and they are now left without a way to defeat the demon.
Rin, enraged by the exorcists' cheating and their accusation that he is a demon, decides to take matters into his own hands. He tracks down Gufu and engages him in a fierce battle. Rin's skills as an exorcist and his natural demon powers enable him to defeat Gufu and save the city from destruction.
After the battle, Rin returns to True Cross Academy, where he is confronted by Yukio, who is angry that Rin put himself in danger. Yukio reminds Rin that he is still in training and should not attempt dangerous missions on his own. Rin realizes that Yukio is right and promises to be more careful in the future.
The episode ends with Rin and the other students of True Cross Academy enjoying a party to celebrate their victory in the gambling tournament. Rin feels happy to have made new friends and grateful for the support he receives from his classmates. However, he knows that his path as a half-demon exorcist will continue to be challenging and dangerous.
