In Blown Away season 1 episode 2, titled "Potluck Party," the glassblowing competition heats up as the ten remaining contestants are asked to create functional glass pieces for a potluck party. The episode begins with a flashback to the previous episode's elimination challenge, where Tim was chosen as the top artist and Keith was sent home.
Host Nikki Di Falco introduces this week's guest judge, glass artist Katherine Gray, and presents the challenge for the week: create three functional glass pieces that could be used at a potluck party. The pieces must be made using traditional techniques and must have a cohesive theme. The contestants have five hours to complete their pieces before presenting them to the judges.
The competitors get to work, with some struggling to appropriately translate their ideas into a functional piece of art. Kevin, for example, wants to make a stunning wine glass set inspired by the ocean, but he finds it difficult to make the glasses match while also making them structurally sound. Meanwhile, Momoko decides to go with a "hedgehog" theme for her pieces and creates a bowl, spoon, and fork shaped like hedgehogs. Her pieces come together well, but she worries that they are too simple for the challenge.
Meanwhile, Tim struggles with his idea to create a serving dish shaped like a chicken, which proves difficult to execute. He has to make several attempts before he can get the overall shape and details just right. Meanwhile, Deborah decides to create a set of pepper and salt shakers shaped like dogs, but she finds it tough to create the appropriate shape and dimensions without the pieces looking awkward.
As the timer runs out, the contestants rush to put the final touches on their pieces before presenting them to the judges. Katherine and Nikki inspect each piece closely, taking note of the technical details, theme, and overall aesthetic.
Overall, some of the contestants execute the challenge quite well, creating beautiful and functional pieces that would certainly impress at any potluck party. Others, however, struggle to bring their ideas to life or make pieces that are structurally sound.
After the presentations, the judges deliberate on each piece, discussing the strengths and weaknesses of each artist's work. Ultimately, they choose a winner for the challenge and decide which two contestants will face elimination.
"Potluck Party" is an engaging and creative episode that showcases the skill and innovation of each of the ten remaining artists. The challenge is unique and forces the contestants to think about their work in different ways, while also putting their technique and creativity to the test. The episode leaves the audience on the edge of their seats as they wait to see who will win and who will have to say goodbye to the competition.
