Ada and Richard receive a visit from Mr. Guppy, who informs them of his intention to propose to Esther. Although the two are concerned about Esther's feelings towards Mr. Guppy, they wish him well and support him in his endeavors. Meanwhile, Esther continues to struggle with her feelings for Mr. Jarndyce, unsure of how to approach the situation.

Elsewhere, Lady Dedlock is disturbed by the arrival of Mrs. Rouncewell's son, who is attempting to blackmail her with knowledge of a secret from her past. Lady Dedlock seeks out the help of Mr. Tulkinghorn, who advises her to dismiss her maid, Rosa, and make preparations to leave London. However, Lady Dedlock is not ready to give up on her current situation and makes a bold decision.

Back at Bleak House, the case of Jarndyce and Jarndyce continues to take its toll on all involved. Mr. Tulkinghorn, determined to find evidence against Lady Dedlock, enlists the help of a certain individual with a grudge against her. Meanwhile, Esther receives an unexpected gift from an unlikely source, causing her to question her current situation and the feelings of those around her.
