However, Kusaka became obsessed with the power the technique could grant him and began experimenting with it in secret. His actions lead to a catastrophic event that left his soul fractured and unstable. Kusaka had been banished as punishment, but he had returned with a plan to exact revenge on the Soul Society.

Ichigo and his friends are shocked by this revelation, but they are determined to stop Kusaka from causing any more harm. However, their task is made more difficult as Kusaka unleashes his Zanpakuto, which has the power to control ice.
