In the season 3 episode 6 of Black-ish titled "Jack of All Trades," viewers are taken on a journey of self-discovery through the eyes of the Johnson family's youngest member, Jack. Jack, who has always been known as the "good boy" and the one who follows the rules, begins to question his identity and interests after seeing his siblings and parents pursue their own passions.
The episode begins with Jack's father, Dre, excitedly showing him a custom-made jacket he had made for him. However, Jack is unimpressed with the jacket and the fact that his father assumed he would like it simply because it was in their family crest colors. Jack begins to realize that he has always followed in his siblings' footsteps and never truly found his own interests. He decides to explore different hobbies, from building with Legos to trying out musical instruments, in an effort to find his true passions.
Meanwhile, Dre is dealing with a dilemma of his own at work. He has been tasked with creating a campaign for an alcoholic beverage that he doesn't personally support. Dre grapples with his moral compass and tries to balance his values with the financial and professional gains the campaign would bring.
Throughout the episode, the Johnson family struggles with ideas of identity and values as they navigate through their respective predicaments. Jack’s parents fear for his future as they realize that they may have unintentionally limited their son by simply telling him what he should like and do, instead of allowing him to explore and discover his own interests.
The episode's biggest takeaway is the power of self-discovery and self-definition. Jack learns that it is not necessary to conform to what others expect of him and that it is okay to explore new things and learn more about himself. His parents, on the other hand, learn that it is important to give their children the freedom to make their own choices and discover their own identities.
As always, the episode features the trademark humor and wit of Black-ish, while also providing a poignant message. It highlights the importance of nurturing individuality and passions, while also challenging the audience's assumptions about identity. The Johnson family continues to tackle tough issues with charm and charisma, making Jack of all Trades a must-watch for fans of the show and newcomers alike.
