In the fifth episode of the third season of the hit comedy series Black-ish, entitled "The Purge", Dre (Anthony Anderson) decides to take Halloween to a whole new level this year by pushing his family to participate in a "blackout" experiment, where the Johnsons become completely anti-technology for the night. Meanwhile, Junior's (Marcus Scribner) excited about finally being able to drive but he doesn't know that Ruby (Jenifer Lewis) is teaching him to "drive" in her old, rundown car.
As the Johnson family prepares for Halloween, Dre finds himself disturbed by the prospect of his kids spending the holiday hooked up to their devices - watching videos, texting, and playing video games. With the help of his wife Bow (Tracee Ellis Ross), Dre hatches a plan to "blackout" their home for the night, forcing their children to spend the evening without the aid of any electronic devices. He hopes this will help his family reconnect and rediscover the joys of playing traditional games like charades and Ouija boards.
As the family indulges in some old-fashioned fun, they begin to discover more about themselves than they ever could have anticipated. Dre quickly finds out that his homophobic father, Pops (Laurence Fishburne) has a surprising hidden talent, while Diane (Marsai Martin) and Jack (Miles Brown) discover that there's more to their silly, superstitious Grandma Ruby than they ever realized.
Meanwhile, Junior's excitement at finally getting his driver's license is dampened when he learns that his grandmother Ruby (Jenifer Lewis) will be teaching him to drive. Rather than learning in a fancy vehicle with all of the modern amenities, Junior finds himself behind the wheel of Ruby's dilapidated old car. As he tries to navigate the streets with her help, he learns some surprising things - like the fact that Ruby's been hiding a secret driving past all these years.
As the night wears on and the family continues to connect and discover new things about each other, it becomes clear that this "blackout" experiment was just what the doctor ordered. By the end of the night, the Johnson family emerges from their technology-free evening feeling more connected, more relaxed, and happier than they have in a long time.
"The Purge" is a fun, heartwarming episode of Black-ish that explores the many benefits of unplugging and connecting with family on a deeper level. Whether you're a fan of the show or just looking for a fun, family-friendly Halloween episode to enjoy with your loved ones, this one is definitely worth checking out.
