In Black-ish Season 3 Episode 15, entitled "I'm a Survivor," the Johnson family is faced with some serious faith-testing challenges when Dre's sister, Rhonda, comes to visit. Rhonda has recently undergone a double mastectomy and chemotherapy treatments after being diagnosed with breast cancer, and her strength and resilience during her journey have inspired Dre and his family.
Despite the resiliency and remarkable survival of Rhonda, they all get worried that something may go wrong. Meanwhile, Zoey is put in charge of the family trip to San Francisco, and things don't go quite as planned.
As Rhonda spends time with her family, it is clear that she is holding onto some lingering resentment over the way Dre had treated her during her illness. She feels that he has not been supportive enough during her trying times, and she is not afraid to let him know how hurt she was by his lack of concern.
Elsewhere, Zoey's mishaps on the San Francisco trip prove to be a lesson in responsibility as her parents challenge her to take ownership of the issues she creates. The family also deals with their own unresolved issues, such as Rainbow's struggle with the fact that the community is so supportive of Rhonda without showing her the same support when she went through postpartum depression.
The episode "I'm a Survivor" takes a heartwarming look at what it means to be a family, while also touching on the very real issues faced by those who have been diagnosed with cancer. It is a poignant reminder of the importance of family support and the power of resilience in the face of adversity.
