In Black-ish season 2 episode 7, titled "Charlie in Charge," the Johnson family's usual babysitter, Mrs. Wheelwright, falls ill, leaving them without a reliable option to watch their children. Charlie, Dre's coworker and friend, steps in and offers to watch the kids for the evening.
At first, everything seems to be going well. Charlie impresses the kids with his cool video game skills and over-the-top snacks. However, things take a turn for the worse when Dre and Bow come home to find the house in shambles and the kids running wild.
As it turns out, Charlie's laid-back approach to babysitting did not include any actual supervision or responsibility. He had let the kids do whatever they wanted, leading to a chaotic and messy scene. Dre and Bow are understandably upset and question Charlie's judgment and reliability.
In an effort to smooth things over, Charlie invites the Johnsons to his home for a dinner party, where he aims to prove that he can be both responsible and fun. However, his plans quickly go awry when his own children start causing chaos, leading to a disastrous evening.
Through it all, the Johnsons come to a realization about the importance of setting boundaries and being responsible, both as parents and caregivers. They also learn to appreciate the loyalty and dependability of Mrs. Wheelwright, who they had taken for granted.
"Charlie in Charge" explores the challenges and rewards of parenting, and the importance of finding a balance between fun and responsibility. The episode showcases the show's trademark humor and heart, as well as its commitment to exploring timely and relevant issues in a relatable and entertaining way.
