In the Black-ish season 2 episode 4 titled "Daddy's Day," the central character Andre 'Dre' Johnson tries to come up with the perfect Father's Day gift for his dad, Earl Johnson. He wants to give him something that he will truly appreciate as he feels that he hasn't been as vocal about his love and affection for his father as he should have been.
Dre decides to take his dad out to a fancy brunch and gifts him a fancy watch. However, his plans get derailed when his father decides to take him out to the golf course, something that Dre has always detested. Earl has been a golf fanatic all his life and has always wanted to have his son play with him. Dre tries to learn the game and impress his father, but things don't go as planned.
Meanwhile, Dre's wife, Rainbow Johnson, has her own plans for Father's Day. She decides to make the day all about her and tries to get some alone time while Dre is away with his father. She has her own struggles with her own father and tries to come to terms with her feelings.
The episode also deals with the theme of masculinity and what it means to be a man. Dre struggles with the fact that he never had a strong relationship with his father and worries that he might not be a good role model for his own son. He tries to come to terms with his own insecurities and doubts about his abilities as a father.
The episode is a heartfelt exploration of the different relationships that exist between fathers and their children. It's a touching tribute to the sacrifices that fathers make for their families and how their love can sometimes go unacknowledged.
As with every Black-ish episode, there are plenty of laughs to go around, and the performances are top-notch. Anthony Anderson as Dre and Laurence Fishburne as Earl Johnson deliver fantastic performances, and the chemistry between them is electric. Tracee Ellis Ross as Rainbow adds her own brand of humor and heart to the episode, making it a well-rounded and enjoyable watch.
Overall, "Daddy's Day" is a beautifully crafted episode that explores the complexities of fatherhood and the importance of appreciating the sacrifices that fathers make. It's a must-watch for anyone who has ever had a father or who is a father themselves.
