In the Black-ish season 2 episode 3 "Dr. Hell No," Dre's charismatic and charming doctor, whom he has been going to for years, retires. Dre is dismayed to discover that he must now see his doctor's son, Dr. Gregory, who has big shoes to fill. Dre initially likes Dr. Gregory, but that quickly changes when he realizes that Dr. Gregory is totally incompetent. Everything about Dr. Gregory is the opposite of his father. Whereas Dre's old doctor was warm and approachable, Dr. Gregory is cold and standoffish. Dr. Gregory also has a terrible bedside manner and is not at all interested in listening to Dre's concerns or answering his questions.
Dre's wife, Bow, encourages him to switch doctors, but Dre is hesitant to do so. He feels loyal to his old doctor and doesn't want to hurt Dr. Gregory's feelings. However, when Dre's health starts to suffer due to Dr. Gregory's negligence, he realizes that he must take action. Dre enlists the help of his coworkers to create a fake medical emergency and show Dr. Gregory just how incompetent he is. Dre's plan works, and he finally switches doctors.
Meanwhile, Bow is struggling with her own issues at work. She has been asked to mentor a new female doctor who she feels embodies everything that is wrong with modern medicine. The new doctor, Dr. Gabby, is more interested in taking selfies and gaining social media followers than actually helping her patients. Bow tries to mentor Dr. Gabby, but she quickly learns that Dr. Gabby is not interested in learning anything from her.
Throughout the episode, Dre and Bow both learn important lessons about the importance of standing up for themselves and not settling for mediocrity. They both realize that they deserve better than what they have been settling for and that it's important to speak up when something isn't right.
"Dr. Hell No" is a hilarious and thought-provoking episode of Black-ish that tackles some important issues in the healthcare industry. It's a must-watch for fans of the show and anyone who enjoys smart, funny television.
