As the name suggests, the 17th episode of season 1 of Black-ish titled "30 Something" explores the anxieties and insecurities of turning 30. Dre is struggling to come to terms with the fact that he is now officially in his 30s. He recalls his younger days when he used to think that 30 is a magical age when one has everything figured out. But as he approaches this milestone, he realizes that he is nowhere close to achieving everything he hoped to by the time he reached this age.
Dre begins to obsess over his age and how he's not as successful as he thought he would be. He becomes increasingly self-conscious and begins to focus on his physical appearance. He begins to diet and exercise vigorously to shed some weight and feel better about himself.
Meanwhile, Bow also starts to freak out as she approaches 30, but her anxieties are quite different from Dre's. She begins to worry about the biological ticking clock, as the chances of getting pregnant decrease with age. She convinces Dre to freeze her eggs as a kind of "insurance policy" in case they're not able to have another child naturally.
As Dre and Bow continue to deal with their respective anxieties, they begin to confide in their friends. Dre's co-worker, Charlie, assures him that being in his 30s is not as bad as he thinks, and he still has time to accomplish his goals. Meanwhile, Bow's friends help her realize that she shouldn't worry too much about getting pregnant and that they will support her no matter what.
The episode also explores the generational differences between Dre and his father, Pops. Pops shares that turning 30 was not a big deal back in his day, whereas Dre's generation has placed a lot of significance on this age as a milestone.
As the episode comes to an end, Dre and Bow have come to terms with turning 30 and have realized that it's not as big a deal as they thought. They have each other and their family, and that's all that matters in the end.
Overall, "30 Something" is a relatable episode that explores the anxieties and insecurities of turning 30. It's an episode that will make viewers think about their own lives and achievements and how they measure up to what they thought they would achieve by this age.
