Bernard Black, the owner of Black Books, has his hands full with the shop's chaotic daily operations. But in the first episode of season 2, titled "The Entertainer," Bernard finds himself dealing with an unusual predicament.
It starts when a shabby-looking man walks into the shop, introducing himself as Manny's old school friend, Danny. Bernard is immediately suspicious of Danny, who he believes is a scammer looking to take advantage of Manny. But to Bernard's surprise, Danny reveals that he is a musician and offers to perform at a local bar, The Pink Spider, that Bernard frequents.
Despite his initial reservations, Bernard agrees to go see Danny perform, and to his surprise, he actually enjoys the show. Danny's music is different from anything Bernard has ever heard, and he becomes convinced that Danny is a musical genius. Bernard, who is in desperate need of some entertainment in his life, decides to become Danny's manager.
As Bernard sets about trying to get Danny discovered, he quickly realizes that the music industry is much harder to navigate than he anticipated. He finds himself dealing with shady music executives and ruthless club owners, all while trying to keep Danny's creative spirit alive. Meanwhile, Manny is skeptical of Bernard's new venture and fears that Bernard is once again getting in over his head.
"The Entertainer" is a hilarious episode that showcases the best of what Black Books has to offer. The dynamic between Bernard, Manny, and Danny is entertaining to watch, and the writing is sharp and witty. The episode is a great start to the second season, and fans of the show will not be disappointed.
