On the second episode of Bizarre Foods season 10, host Andrew Zimmern takes us on a journey to the beautiful and exotic land of Hawaii. But instead of exploring the popular tourist destinations, Zimmern sets out to discover the hidden culinary treasures of the islands that remain undiscovered by many visitors.
From the remote island of Molokai to the lush forests of Kauai, Zimmern travels across Hawaii's diverse landscapes to meet with local chefs, farmers, and fishermen who are eager to share their unique ingredients and dishes. Along the way, viewers will get a taste of the diverse food culture that exists in Hawaii beyond the traditional luaus and poke bowls.
In Molokai, Zimmern joins a group of locals for a traditional Hawaiian feast known as a pa'ina. The feast features a bounty of fresh seafood caught by local fishermen, including octopus, crab, and fish. Zimmern is also introduced to taro, a root vegetable that is a staple in Hawaiian cuisine and a symbol of the Hawaiian culture. He learns how to make poi, a traditional Hawaiian dish made from taro, and samples various other dishes made from the versatile root vegetable.
Moving on to Kauai, Zimmern explores the island's lush forests and samples a unique type of honey made from the nectar of the ohia tree. He meets with a local beekeeper who takes him on a tour of the hives and explains the process of producing the rare and delicious honey. Zimmern also visits a local restaurant where he samples a variety of dishes made with unconventional ingredients like wild boar and deer.
In Maui, Zimmern heads to a local goat farm where he learns about the process of making goat cheese. He meets with the owner of the farm and samples various types of goat cheese, including a spicy jalapeno variety and a sweet honey flavor. Zimmern also samples some of the farm's other products, like fresh goat milk and yogurt.
Finally, Zimmern visits the Big Island of Hawaii, where he meets with a chef who sources all of his ingredients from within a 100-mile radius of his restaurant. He samples dishes made with locally grown produce and meat from nearby farms, including a unique dish made with tilapia that is sourced from a nearby aquaponics farm.
Throughout the episode, Zimmern showcases the unique ingredients and dishes that make up Hawaii's diverse culinary landscape. From traditional Hawaiian dishes to innovative fusion cuisine, he proves that there is more to Hawaii than just surf, sand, and sun.
