Big Nate is an American television series that is based on a very popular comic book series of the same name. This show primarily focuses on the titular character, Nate Wright, and his adventures while he is in middle school. In the second episode of the show, titled Go Nate, It's Your Birthday, the audience gets to witness Nate's grand birthday celebration.
The episode starts with Nate waking up on the morning of his birthday, but he soon realizes that nobody has paid attention to the date except for his father. Nate's father made him pancakes to celebrate the occasion, and this is the only bright spot in the entire day so far. Nate's best friend, Francis, comes over to meet him, but he forgets that it's Nate's birthday and ends up accidentally insulting him. Nate is understandably upset, especially since he had planned a big birthday party and invited all his classmates.
As the day progresses, Nate's mood progressively worsens. When he reaches school, he realizes that none of his classmates have brought him any presents or even wished him a happy birthday. He spends the entire day sulking and feeling sorry for himself, even when his friends try to cheer him up. Eventually, Nate's attitude becomes so negative that even the adults around him start to get irritated.
Meanwhile, Nate's arch-nemesis, Gina, is chosen to lead an important project on behalf of the school. Nate is furious when he hears about it because he believes that he should have been chosen instead. In his anger, he creates a conspiracy theory that Gina only got to lead the project because she bribed the teacher in charge. He tries to convince his classmates to boycott the project, but nobody takes him seriously, and he ends up embarrassing himself.
At this point, Nate is feeling like his entire birthday has been a disaster, and nothing is going his way. He even starts to question whether his friends truly care about him, which leads him to have a heart to heart with his father. His dad reminds him that he is loved and appreciated, even if the day hasn't gone exactly as planned.
Things finally turn around for Nate when his classmates reveal that they had planned a surprise party for him the entire time. They decorated the classroom with balloons and streamers, and even brought out a cake with his name on it. In that moment, Nate realizes that he had been so caught up in his own misery that he had forgotten to be grateful for the people in his life who love him. He apologizes to his friends for his behavior throughout the day and has a fun celebration with them.
Overall, the episode Go Nate, It's Your Birthday is a great representation of how sometimes we can get so caught up in our own expectations and disappointments that we forget to appreciate the good things in our lives. Nate's journey throughout the episode is relatable to anyone who has ever had a bad day, and the resolution is heartwarming. This episode is definitely a standout in the first season of Big Nate.
