Ep 11. I Don't Want to Be a Toad, I Want to Be a Butterfly

Samantha and Darrin carry on as mortal newlyweds. After some time passes, Samantha decides that she wants to have a baby and surprises her childhood friend, Barbara, who is also a witch, with the news. To show her support, Barbara transforms into a butterfly and flies into the room, but quickly transforms back into a witch and disappears after Samantha reveals her hope for a baby with Darrin. Larry Tate, Darrin's boss, stops by the Stephens home to inquire about some work-related business, but Samantha's absent-mindedness causes her to accidentally transform Tate into a toad.

Although Samantha quickly transforms Larry Tate back into a human, the experience leaves him feeling deeply rattled and spooks Darrin. Larry reminds Darrin that, as a mortal, he isn't supposed to be aware of witches or magic, and emphasizes that caution is key when dealing with supernatural events. Darrin worries about the impact witchcraft could have on their family and future children.

To ease Darrin's mind and to seek additional support and guidance, Samantha seeks the help of a family friend, Aunt Clara, who is one of Samantha's witch relatives. Meanwhile, Tabitha, Samantha and Darrin's young daughter, attempts to perform some magic of her own after seeing Barbara transform into a butterfly the previous day. This prompts Aunt Clara to encourage Tabitha to remain patient and to focus on following the proper guidelines for performing witchcraft.

Barbara reappears, displeased to hear that Darrin is wary about having a witch for a wife. Barbara offers to cast a spell on Darrin that would erase his memory of ever meeting Samantha, but Samantha refuses to allow it. Instead, she explains to Barbara that she and Darrin are truly in love and asks her to respect their relationship. Barbara apologizes and leaves, still not entirely convinced that Darrin is right for Samantha.

Later, Samantha and Darrin are out for a walk when they happen upon a caterpillar who is determined to become a butterfly, despite the persistence of the other caterpillars who insist that this transformation is impossible. Samantha admires the caterpillar's determination and encourages the little creature, telling it that it's possible for it to become a butterfly with time and patience.

Darrin sees this as a metaphor for Samantha's magical abilities and advises her to practice caution with her powers, but to always be true to herself. The couple returns home to find that Barbara has visited again, this time to apologize for her earlier actions. She expresses her concern for Samantha's happiness and approves of Darrin as Samantha's choice of husband. With this act of kindness from her former protestor, Samantha and Darrin head off to bed, hopeful for a positive future with a potential little one on the way.
