In “If I Had a Hammer,” the eleventh episode of Beverly Hills 90210’s seventh season, viewers are treated to a heart-warming tale of friendship, community and redemption.
The episode starts off with Brandon getting a call from Dylan's lawyer, who informs him that the troubled millionaire is being sued by his ex-business partner, and could lose everything he has worked so hard for. Feeling guilty about his past actions, Brandon offers to offer Dylan a loan, but only on the condition that he admits that his drug addiction was the cause of their estrangement.
Meanwhile, Valerie's aunt, who has been estranged from the family for over 20 years, has come to visit her. The two women have a tense reunion, with Valerie wondering what her aunt wants from her. She soon discovers that her aunt wants to sell her house, which has been empty for years, to a developer who plans to tear it down to build a high-rise. Not wanting to see her childhood memories destroyed, Valerie takes on the challenge of renovating the house, with help from her friends, Steve and David.
At the same time, Donna is working hard to organize a charity concert to raise money for children's hospitals. She enlists the help of Ray Pruitt, her ex-boyfriend and the lead singer of the band, Color Me Badd, to headline the event. However, things take a turn for the worse when Ray's colorful past comes back to haunt him. Confronted by his violent behavior in the past, Donna has doubts about whether she wants to continue working with him.
As the episode progresses, the three storylines intersect as the teenagers rally together to help Valerie renovate her aunt's house. In a heartwarming scene, the gang works together to fix up the house, hammering and nailing together. The house becomes symbolic of their community, their shared history, and the bonds that bind them.
Despite its light-hearted tone, the episode addresses important issues such as drug addiction, domestic violence, and the plight of children who are hospitalized. The characters tackle these issues with their usual mix of humor, sensitivity and good intentions.
Ultimately, “If I Had a Hammer” is an uplifting episode that serves as a reminder of the power of friendship, community, and the importance of coming together to face adversity. Fans of the show will be pleased to see their favorite characters back together again, and the satisfying resolution to all the plotlines. Newcomers to the show will find this episode a great introduction to the characters and the world of Beverly Hills 90210.
