In this fourth episode of the first season of Between Two Ferns, host Zach Galifianakis sits down with actress Natalie Portman for an awkward and sarcastic interview.
The episode begins with Galifianakis asking Portman if she's ever mistaken for a younger version of Anne Hathaway, to which Portman responds with a flat "no" and a disapproving look. Galifianakis then asks if she gets upset that her Star Wars character, Padmé Amidala, is more well known than her other work. Portman humorously replies that she's fine with it because it pays for her grandmother's nursing home.
The interview continues with Galifianakis jokingly asking Portman if she's ever "been in a movie that people have seen?" and making fun of her Harvard education by pretending to forget how to pronounce the word "Harvard". He also brings up Portman's past work with Woody Allen and asks her if she knows that you can't be on a first name basis with him unless you're under 16 or a Chinese gymnast.
The conversation takes a strange turn when Galifianakis starts asking Portman bizarre questions like if she's ever "smelled mothballs" and "Do you like it when you go to the supermarket and the cashier asks if you want paper or plastic?" Portman looks visibly uncomfortable throughout the interview but maintains her composure and even plays along with Galifianakis' strange antics by pretending that a plant behind her is her child.
At one point, Galifianakis gets up from his seat and begins to do a bizarre interpretive dance routine before returning to the interview as if nothing happened. He also asks Portman if she's ever been in a movie with a "kangaroo as a co-star" which results in Portman humorously pretending to be offended.
Throughout the interview, Portman keeps a straight face and responds to each of Galifianakis' questions with dry humor and sarcasm. She also takes a few jabs at him, asking if "this is what he does all day" and commenting on his beard by saying "I've never really seen that much hair in one place on a person's face before."
The episode ends with Galifianakis asking Portman if she wants to go on a date with him to which she responds with a polite decline, saying she has a boyfriend. Galifianakis then tries to save himself by saying he meant a "group hang" and asking if he can bring his "ghost friends" to which Portman jokes that she's "had too many ghost ex-boyfriends."
Overall, this episode of Between Two Ferns is a hilarious and uncomfortable interview with Natalie Portman. Galifianakis' bizarre questions and Portman's deadpan responses make for an entertaining watch.
