In "50% Off," the second episode of Better Call Saul's fifth season, Jimmy McGill continues to grapple with his decision to change his name to Saul Goodman. While his girlfriend Kim Wexler can't seem to get enough of his newly created con artist persona, Jimmy(the show's main character) is still struggling to embrace it fully. With his brother Chuck gone, Jimmy is free to pursue a more reckless approach to life, but it's clear that he still has doubts about whether he's doing the right thing.
The episode sees Jimmy trying to figure out how to make himself more visible on the Albuquerque law scene, but finding that he isn't being taken seriously by potential clients. His solution? To turn to a new avenue of business altogether. At the same time, Jimmy is also working with Kim on a pro bono case that proves to be a lot harder than they originally thought it would be. As they continue to take on the challenges of representing the underdog, Jimmy struggles to find his place in the world as Saul Goodman.
Meanwhile, Mike Ehrmantraut, a retired cop-turned-criminal, is also dealing with his own issues. He's gone to great lengths to protect his granddaughter from the dangers of his old life, but now he's being drawn back into the criminal underworld once again. As he tries to keep his involvement with Gus Fring a secret, Mike is forced to navigate some tricky situations that could put his granddaughter in danger.
As always, the writing in "50% Off" is top-notch. The episode's slow-burn approach allows us to sink deeper into the characters and their motivations, and the dialogue crackles with wit and intelligence. While the show can be dark and intense at times, it also knows how to have fun, and there are plenty of moments in this episode that will have you laughing out loud.
Overall, "50% Off" is another strong entry in what's shaping up to be a great season of Better Call Saul. With its complex characters, intricate plotting and smart storytelling, it's one of the best shows on TV right now, and definitely worth checking out if you haven't already.
