In the season 2 finale of Better Call Saul, Jimmy's brother Chuck is in critical condition after his house caught fire. Jimmy is beside himself with guilt and worry as he tries to navigate the hospital and legal systems to help his brother, who is battling a severe case of electromagnetic hypersensitivity. Meanwhile, Kim is facing her own professional and personal crisis as she contemplates the repercussions of quitting her job at HHM to start her own law practice with Jimmy.
The majority of the episode is dedicated to Jimmy's desperate attempts to gain control over the situation with Chuck. He barges into the hospital, demanding to be let into Chuck's room, but is rebuffed by the nurses. He tries to reach out to his brother, but Chuck is unresponsive. Later, Jimmy's frustration boils over as he confronts his brother's doctors and argues with them over Chuck's care.
In flashbacks, we see the early days of Jimmy and Chuck's relationship. We witness the initial seeds of resentment that would eventually grow into a deep-seated animosity between them. We witness Chuck's contempt for Jimmy's flashy, fast-talking ways, and we see Jimmy's growing anger at the way Chuck has always held him back.
Meanwhile, Kim is struggling with her own decisions. She can't shake the feeling that she's made a mistake, leaving her comfortable job at HHM to take a risk with Jimmy. She confides in Jimmy that she's unsure if she has what it takes to go out on her own. Jimmy assures her that they'll make it work, but his words ring hollow against the backdrop of Chuck's dire condition.
The episode builds to a heart-wrenching climax as Jimmy sits vigil by Chuck's hospital bed. There is a palpable sense of foreboding as the doctors work to stabilize Chuck's condition. We see a montage of Jimmy's memories of Chuck, both good and bad, as he sits alone in the hospital room. Finally, the moment arrives, and Jimmy is forced to confront the possibility of life without his brother. The episode ends on a devastating cliffhanger, leaving viewers to ponder the fate of one of the show's most beloved characters.
