Jimmy continues his attempts to establish himself as a respectable lawyer in episode 4 of Better Call Saul season 1, entitled "Hero." While he struggles to gain ground on a number of fronts, including possible malpractice suits, familial tensions, and business partnerships, he begins to hit his stride as a criminal lawyer.
As Jimmy develops a budding reputation on the fringes of the legal profession, he faces increasing scrutiny from the more conservative members of the bar. One such lawyer, Clifford Main (Ed Begley Jr.), berates Jimmy for his unorthodox style and urges him to consider other career paths. But Jimmy refuses to be deterred, confident in his abilities and determined to make a name for himself.
Meanwhile, Jimmy's relationship with his brother Chuck (Michael McKean) becomes even more strained as he begins to mistrust the elderly lawyer's mental health. As rumors about Chuck's condition begin to crop up, including allegations of electromagnetic hypersensitivity, Jimmy's efforts to distance himself from his family only intensify.
However, Jimmy's fortunes take a turn for the better when he discovers a new client in need of his expertise. A group of skateboarders are accused of vandalism and trespassing, and Jimmy sees an opportunity to redeem himself in the eyes of the public. By taking on their case and going to great lengths to win their trust, Jimmy gains a newfound sense of purpose and a renewed sense of hope for his future in law.
Throughout the episode, Jimmy's efforts to balance his personal and professional lives are thrown into sharp relief. On one hand, he struggles with the expectations of others and the constraints of the legal system. On the other, he finds joy and satisfaction in the small victories he experiences as a criminal lawyer. Ultimately, Jimmy must decide where his true loyalties lie and what kind of lawyer he wants to be: a hero to the downtrodden, or a pawn of the establishment.
Despite its somber subject matter, "Hero" is a characteristically smart and entertaining episode, full of twists, turns, and unexpected developments. As always, Bob Odenkirk delivers a standout performance as Jimmy, balancing humor and heartbreak with a deftness that is sure to delight fans of the show. With its sharp writing and pitch-perfect direction, "Hero" is a must-see episode that is sure to leave audiences eagerly awaiting the rest of the season.
