Bergerac was a popular British detective drama series produced by the BBC in the 1980s. The show revolved around Detective Jim Bergerac, played by John Nettles, who worked for the fictional police department on the island of Jersey in the Channel Islands. The third season of the show consisted of ten episodes, first broadcast from 6th January to 9th March 1985.
In episode 5 of the third season, titled "Come Out Fighting," Jim Bergerac is called upon to investigate the death of a local boxing champion. The victim, Eddie Tobin, had been the undisputed heavyweight champion of the Channel Islands and was known for his skills in the boxing ring as well as his connections to the criminal underworld. Eddie's body is discovered in a locker room just before a big boxing match, and it quickly becomes clear that he has been murdered.
Bergerac begins his investigation by interviewing the victim's trainer, Mickey, who is devastated by the loss of his friend and protege. Mickey tells Bergerac that Eddie had recently been threatened by a gangster named Tony Dean, who had been betting heavily against Eddie to win the upcoming fight. Tony was known to be involved in the illegal trade of stolen goods, and Bergerac suspects that Eddie's murder may be connected to this criminal underworld.
As the investigation progresses, Bergerac uncovers a complex web of relationships between Eddie and the criminal syndicate that controls much of the island's illegal activity. He discovers that Eddie had been working with the gangster Tony Dean to smuggle goods into the island and that their business relationship had gone sour in recent weeks. Bergerac also learns that Eddie had been having an affair with Tony's wife, Karen, a fact which may have added further fuel to the dispute.
The investigation takes a surprising turn when a potential witness, a young woman named Tiffany, comes forward claiming to have seen the killer leaving the scene of the crime. However, Bergerac soon realizes that Tiffany may not be as innocent as she seems and that her testimony may be compromised by her own involvement in the criminal underworld. The chase is on to find the killer and bring them to justice, as Bergerac races against time to prevent further loss of life.
"Come Out Fighting" is a fast-paced and exciting episode of Bergerac, filled with tension, drama, and unexpected twists. The investigation keeps the viewer guessing as new evidence is uncovered and suspects are eliminated one by one. The performances of the cast, led by John Nettles as Jim Bergerac, are sharp and engaging, bringing the story to life with their skill and intensity. As always, the beautiful island of Jersey provides an idyllic backdrop for the action, contrasting sharply with the cruelty and violence of the criminal underworld.
Overall, "Come Out Fighting" is a standout episode of Bergerac, showcasing the best of the show's mix of drama, action, and suspense. Fans of the show will not want to miss this thrilling installment, while newcomers will be drawn in by the captivating story and excellent performances.
