Being Ian is an animated television series that revolved around the life of the titular character Ian Kelley, a 12-year-old boy who aspired to be a filmmaker. This show followed Ian's daily adventures as he navigates through his everyday activities, dealing with family, school, friends, and his wild imagination. The show is set in Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada, and originally aired on YTV in Canada and on Cartoon Network in the US.
Season 1 episode 11 of Being Ian is called "Joust Kiddin Around." In this episode, Ian and his best friend, Ty, get involved in a medieval reenactment group, Knights of the Square Table. They are fascinated by the group's cool armor, swords, and shields. However, they are dismayed to learn that this "nerdy" hobby involves lots of reading and memorization, as the group must learn all the chivalric codes of the medieval era.
Ian is not thrilled with the idea of reading a book to learn about chivalry, but Ty convinces him to go ahead. When they start reading the book, the dry, academic language of the old-timey text makes them both fall asleep, but not before they get the idea of having a jousting tournament at the local park to recruit new members for the Knights of the Square Table.
The tournament is a success, with many kids coming from all over the neighborhood to participate. Things are going well until the reigning champion, Robert Mochrie (aka Sir Robert), arrives on the scene, ready to defend his title. Ian challenges Sir Robert to a jousting match, and things quickly spiral out of control.
Ian and Sir Robert go at it with their makeshift jousting equipment, but they both become too competitive and take the match too seriously. They start to ruin each other's armor, damaging the helmets and shields, and devolve into a physical altercation. The other members of the group step in and put an end to the fight, reminding Ian and Sir Robert that being a knight is not about winning or losing but about respecting others and showing kindness.
In the end, Ian and Sir Robert apologize to each other and become friends. They learn the true meaning of chivalry, which is not about brute force but about respect, courtesy, and loyalty to friends and group members. The episode ends with the boys all enjoying a friendly game of soccer, as they return to their normal lives, leaving behind the jousting tournament and the medieval world behind.
Overall, "Joust Kiddin Around" is a heartwarming episode that teaches the importance of sportsmanship, camaraderie, and respect at a young age. Ian and Sir Robert went through a valuable learning experience that taught them that being friends is much more important than being rivals. The show itself was known for its humor, creativity, and relatable characters and situations, making it a great animated series for both kids and adults.
