Being Erica is a Canadian television series that follows the life of Erica Strange, a young woman who has the unique ability to time travel and relive moments from her past in order to better understand and improve her present. In season 4 episode 7, entitled "Being Ethan," Erica's focus is temporarily shifted away from her own life as she travels back in time to help her friend Ethan.

The episode begins with Erica desperately trying to help Ethan, a former friend and fellow patient from her therapy group, who has fallen into a deep depression and has been unreachable for weeks. After exhausting every option in the present day, Erica decides to travel back to the time when she first met Ethan in therapy in order to learn more about what could be causing his current state.

As Erica time travels to the past she is immediately transported to the first therapy session where she meets Ethan for the first time. After observing Ethan and his behavior in the present, Erica assumes that his issues must have stemmed from his difficult relationship with his father, who was also present in therapy with Ethan. However, as Erica delves deeper into Ethan's past, she realizes that there is much more to his story than she initially thought.

Erica discovers that Ethan had always struggled with feeling accepted and loved by his family. He had a difficult childhood, which included his parents' divorce and his father's remarriage. Throughout his life, Ethan had been searching for a place where he felt he belonged, and this was something that was still affecting him in the present.

In order to help Ethan, Erica decides to take him on a journey through his past, where they revisit some of the key moments that shaped his life. Erica hopes that by helping Ethan confront his past, he will finally be able to move on and find happiness in the present.

During the journey, Erica and Ethan explore his earliest memories, including his parents' divorce, his father's remarriage, and his struggles in school. Along the way, Erica helps Ethan confront some of the negative emotions that he had suppressed, including anger and resentment towards his father. By doing so, Erica hopes to help Ethan find closure and move on from his childhood wounds.

As the journey progresses, Erica also helps Ethan reconnect with some positive memories from his childhood, such as his love for music and his relationship with his grandfather. These moments help Ethan realize that he has always had people in his life that cared for him, even during his darkest moments.

Towards the end of the episode, Erica realizes that she too has been affected by her experiences with Ethan and his family. Watching Ethan confront his past has forced Erica to confront some of her own issues, including her fear of vulnerability and her struggle with trust.

Overall, "Being Ethan" is a powerful episode that showcases the impact that our past can have on our present. Through Erica's journey with Ethan, we see that healing is possible, even in the most difficult of circumstances. Ultimately, the episode reminds us that we are all shaped by our past, but it is up to us to decide how we let it define us.
